Child Protection Commitment & Policy

At Mt Kenya Trekking Expeditions, operated by Hiking Mt. Kenya Highlands Expeditions Ltd., we are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all children participating in our trekking adventures, safaris, educational trips, and outdoor experiences.
We believe every child has the right to be treated with dignity, protected from harm, and able to enjoy their experience in a safe environment.
1. Scope
This policy applies to:
- Children under the age of 18 participating in our mountain climbing, safaris, and other tour activities.
- Parents and legal guardians.
- Our guides, porters, cooks, drivers, office staff, and any contractors working on our behalf.
2. Our Commitment
We strive to:
- Prioritize the safety and wellbeing of children throughout every trip.
- Treat all children with respect, fairness, and dignity.
- Maintain a safe environment during trekking, camping, transport, and safari activities.
- Encourage responsible conduct from our staff and guests.
3. Supervision
Children must remain under the supervision of a parent, legal guardian, teacher, or designated group leader throughout the tour unless specific supervision arrangements have been agreed upon in advance.
Our guides are responsible for the safe operation of activities but do not replace parental or guardian supervision.
4. Staff Conduct
Our team members are expected to:
- Behave professionally at all times.
- Treat children with courtesy and respect.
- Avoid inappropriate language or behaviour.
- Never engage in any form of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse or exploitation.
- Respect children's privacy during accommodation and camping arrangements.
5. Safety During Activities
To help ensure a safe experience:
- Activities will be planned with consideration for the age and ability of participants.
- Safety briefings will be provided before activities begin.
- Appropriate equipment and safety procedures will be used.
- Emergency procedures are in place for trekking and safari activities.
6. Photography
We may take photographs during tours for promotional purposes only with the consent of parents, guardians, or group leaders where appropriate.
Guests are expected to respect the privacy of other participants, especially children, when taking photographs.
7. Reporting Concerns
Any concerns regarding the safety or welfare of a child should be reported immediately to our management team.
All reports will be treated seriously, handled confidentially where appropriate, and investigated promptly.
8. Compliance
Mt Kenya Trekking Expeditions is committed to complying with applicable child protection laws and continually reviewing our policies and practices to promote the safety and wellbeing of all young Guests.
