Health and Safety Policy

Effective Date: 27/7/2026

At Mt Kenya Trekking Expeditions, the safety and wellbeing of our Guests, guides, porters, cooks, drivers, and other personnel are important to us.
Our trekking, hiking, technical climbing, safari, camping, and outdoor activities take place in natural environments where weather, terrain, altitude, wildlife, and other conditions can present inherent risks. We therefore take reasonable measures to identify and manage these risks throughout our trips.

1. Guest Health and Fitness

Guests are responsible for honestly informing Mt Kenya Trekking Expeditions of any medical condition, allergy, medication requirement, physical limitation, or other health consideration that may affect their participation.
Guests should seek appropriate medical advice before participating in physically demanding activities where necessary.
For Mount Kenya treks, Guests should be prepared for strenuous walking, changing weather, steep or uneven terrain, cold temperatures, and altitude-related challenges.

2. Safety Briefings

Guests may receive safety instructions and briefings before and during activities.
Guests are expected to follow reasonable safety instructions provided by guides and other authorized personnel.
A guide may recommend modifying, postponing, or stopping an activity where conditions present an unacceptable or significant risk to a Guest or the wider group.

3. Weather and Natural Conditions

Outdoor activities may be affected by rain, storms, snow, strong winds, extreme temperatures, poor visibility, landslides, difficult terrain, or other natural conditions.
Routes, schedules, campsites, or activities may therefore be adjusted when reasonably necessary for safety.

4. Altitude and Mountain Safety

Guests participating in Mount Kenya trekking activities should understand that altitude can affect people differently.
Guests are expected to report symptoms of illness, exhaustion, altitude-related discomfort, or other health concerns to their guide as soon as possible.
Where a Guest's health or safety is at risk, the guide may recommend descent, evacuation, medical attention, or withdrawal from an activity.

5. Wildlife Safety

Guests participating in safaris or activities in wildlife areas must follow the instructions of guides and relevant authorities.
Guests should maintain appropriate distances from wildlife, remain in designated areas where required, and must not attempt to feed, touch, chase, provoke, or otherwise interfere with wild animals.

6. Alcohol and Intoxicating Substances

Guests must not participate in activities while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or any substance that could reasonably affect their ability to make safe decisions or follow safety instructions.

7. Equipment and Personal Responsibility

Guests are responsible for bringing appropriate clothing, footwear, medication, personal equipment, identification, and other items recommended for their particular trip.
Where equipment is provided or rented, Guests are expected to use it responsibly and according to instructions.

8. Emergency Situations

In an emergency, Mt Kenya Trekking Expeditions will take reasonable steps to protect the Guest and coordinate appropriate assistance, evacuation, medical care, or other emergency response where practicable.
Emergency and evacuation procedures may vary according to the location, terrain, weather, communications availability, and nature of the emergency.

9. Limitations of Outdoor Activities

While we take reasonable precautions, outdoor travel and adventure activities carry inherent risks that cannot always be completely eliminated.
Guests acknowledge these risks when booking and participating in our activities.

10. Policy Review

We regularly review our safety practices and may update this policy when necessary.
This policy should be read together with our Booking Terms & Conditions and Emergency & Evacuation Policy.
