1-day Aberdare Elephant Hill Trek

Escape the city for a full day of adventure in the Aberdare Ranges on an exhilarating Elephant Hill hike. The trail on this mountain trek takes you through indigenous forest, towering bamboo, giant heather, and rugged high-altitude terrain, with spectacular views across the Great Rift Valley. Along the way, you may encounter wildlife tracks and abundant birdlife while enjoying changing mountain landscapes.

Nairobi – Aberdare Elephant Hill

Our Elephant Hill adventure begins with an early morning pickup from Nairobi. Departure is around 5:00 AM, giving us the chance to enjoy the sunrise along the way. The drive into the Aberdares offers beautiful views of the Great Rift Valley and the landscapes of central Kenya.

Elephant Hill Hike

On arrival at the trailhead, we report to the park rangers for a short briefing before beginning the hike. This is also the time to leave behind anything you won't need on the trail. It is recommended to carry sufficient drinking water and rain protection, as mountain weather can change quickly.

Our Aberdare trek starts through forested terrain, with open glades offering views across the Great Rift Valley including Lake Naivasha and Mount Longonot. Keep an eye out for wildlife and signs of elephants, antelopes, colobus monkeys, and a variety of birdlife.

As we climb higher, the forest transitions into the spectacular bamboo zone. The trail becomes steeper as it winds beneath towering bamboo and through an increasingly wild mountain landscape. 

Beyond the bamboo, the trail takes us to the higher-altitude terrain passing through giant heather and moss-covered vegetation. The final approach reveals the distinctive Elephant Hill summit. From this section, we enjoy a clear 360-degree views of Mount Kinangop, Mount Kenya, Lake Naivasha, and Sasumua and Ndakaini Dams.

Descent & Return

After enjoying the summit and surrounding views, begin the descent. The downhill section can be demanding and takes approximately 3 - 4 hours to reach the forest station.
